Is It an Emergency? Signs Your Pet Needs Immediate Care
It can sometimes be difficult to tell whether a situation requires an emergency veterinary hospital visit. If your pet is exhibiting any of the following, please bring them to our animal clinic immediately:
- Trauma or Injury: Hit by a car, severe falls, animal attacks, or deep wounds.
- Breathing Difficulties: Choking, severe coughing, or blue/pale gums.
- Poisoning/Toxin Ingestion: Chocolate, grapes, rodenticides, medications, or chemicals.
- Severe GI Distress: Uncontrolled vomiting/diarrhea, or a bloated, hard abdomen.
- Neurological Issues: Seizures, disorientation, collapse, or inability to stand/walk.
- Urinary Distress: Inability to urinate or straining (especially in male cats).
- Extreme Pain: Whining, hiding, aggression, or heavy panting.
What to Do in a Pet Emergency
- Stay Calm & Keep Safe: Injured pets may bite or scratch out of fear. Handle them gently.
- Call Us Immediately: Contact our emergency vet team at (813) 269-8322 to let us know you are en route.
- Safely Transport Your Pet: Secure cats in a carrier. Wrap dogs in a blanket or use a makeshift stretcher if they cannot walk.
- Drive Carefully: Get to our animal hospital safely — your safety is crucial to getting your pet the help they need.
